Europa Grande is a non-profit association founded in 2001 with the mission of promoting EU enlargement for an ever closer union amongst the peoples of Europe. One of the rationales for our early focus on enlargement was that, the larger the EU common market became relative to those left out, the larger the benefits of trade creation would be relative to the costs of trade diversion.
When Europa Grande was born, the EU had 15 member states, a number which has almost doubled ever since. The EU has also signed association and trade agreements with many important nations and trading blocs around the world, and is constantly negotiating new ones. The EU is also increasing its international presence in the framework of its Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Our association's scope has also evolved, so that Europa Grande currently understands enlargement in a broader sense. It supports a great Europe not only in terms of EU membership, but also in terms of its global reach. This includes areas such as neighbourhood, trade, development, and common foreign and security policy.
The association is officially registered by the National Registry of Associations of the Spanish ministry of the interior under the category of "arts, humanities and social sciences". Its activities have included the sponsorship of teaching, debate and research activities, such as public lectures, summer courses, scientific meetings, and publications, as well as, more recently, volunteering and international development co-operation.
Europa Grande has sponsored the European Journal of Government and Economics and the EUROSCI Network. It was awarded in 2020 a quality label of the European Solidarity Corps.
